Narrative Mapping The World

Get Started

To contribute to Hitotoki, you currently need a Twitter account and an iPhone (or similar GPS enabled device with a Twitter client).

The following steps are for the (highly recommended) Tweetie iPhone client (version 2.1).

Step 1

Make sure "Enable geotagging" is checked on your Twitter account settings page.

Step 2

In Tweetie, under 'Accounts' > 'Settings' (bottom left of screen) > 'Services', make sure yFrog is selected as your 'Image Service'

Step 3

When composing a sketch you'd like to contribute to Hitotoki, ensure 'Geotag' is enabled. Once enabled it should always be on.

Step 4

Finally, don't forget to include '@hitotoki' in your text to let the Hitotoki system know you want it recorded.

Requirements in detail

Here are the Twitter client requirements:

  • Geotagging enabled (sending location data with your tweet)
  • Photos uploaded via yFrog

To add your own moments to the Hitotoki community, simply send a tweet with '@hitotoki' somewhere in the body and make sure geotagging is enabled. If you want to add a photo, make sure it's attached via the yFrog image service.

If you don't mention @hitotoki, or if geotagging isn't enabled (if your location isn't sent), the moment sketch won't be picked up by the system.

If everything is sent properly your moment should appear in the system within a few minutes.

Down the road

This is the first iteration of the Twitter protocol based Hitotoki system. We have lots of system improvements and features lined up. For the sake of development, design and user interaction simplicity we established the barest baseline requirements: geotagging, a single image service (yFrog) and a single notification (@hitotoki) method.

We want to iteratre quickly and with as much feedback from you all — the users — as possible. We want this to be a service that works for you, effortlessly and seamlessly.

In other words: let us know what you think! (hi@hitotoki.org)
