Neverending conversations or segmented reality?

September 1st, 2015, 7pm

It was 26°C with few clouds. The breeze was gentle.

The advantages of chatting and texting are clear: it is cheap, it is fast, it is omnipresent. However, it also transformed radically the way how we communicate. Chats and instant message applications do not have a beginning or an end, they offer us the possibility of having a constant, liquid conversation that flows over time: hours, days, months.

Not long ago, having the final say in a conversation was a sign of cleverness, it meant there was an agreement on what has been said last. Now, on the contrary, having the final say in a discussion on Facebook messenger or Whatsapp means the other person does not bother to reply. It is rather a statement of the other person’s opinion than a sign of the last speaker’s wit. At this point and in this situation, when you have the last word in a conversation, it means you have lost.
