As brilliant as this day suggested it might become, it couldn't outdo my daughter's smile as I left for work.

September 3rd, 2013, 9pm

It was 9°C with few clouds. The breeze was gentle.

Every morning, when I leave for work, a piece of me remains. At the moment my daughter thinks it’s a game; I ask for a kiss, she turns away and digs her face into my wife’s shoulder. I wonder when it will cease to be a game and, in all seriousness, she asks me if I have to go today. I’d rather stay and watch her take her first steps, wiggle her hips as she dances to The National’s ‘I Should Live in Salt’, and listen to her cute indecipherable babble. She’s only one. Maybe I’m thinking too far ahead.
