Local geography

August 28th, 2014, 7pm

It was 18.9°C with overcast. The wind was light.

When you live in a place with no street signs, directions can get a bit more poetic, “turn right on the dirt road at the top of the hill past the house where so-and-so used to live.” Even when the street signs are finally added and houses have changed hands the the old descriptions remain. It’s a more personal and emotional geography than an abstract grid of named streets. Even after moving to a place where there are many streets, all named, I find myself navigating by landmarks rather than knowing what street comes next.
