New public space tucked into a Lower Manhattan wind tunnel, sucking people from East Village into offices far and away.

August 2nd, 2013, 8am

It was 20.6°C. The breeze was light.

This triangular sliver of a public space is a new addition to the city. A couple years ago it was the New York Film Academy Cafe, now shuttered and replaced, along with the rest of the block, with a brand new NYU building, towering above the area. I used to walk around this area on my way to work, avoiding it because of the construction, but also because of the massive flow of people through this street getting into the subway stop just under the building’s shadow. The trees and benches hold a couple of people back from the flow, but most just get sucked into the subway stop and up and down the offices of Manhattan.
