Long shadows in setting sun

April 14th, 2014, 7pm

19:36 marks the minute. The last of the sun makes the facades on the opposite side of the street look like they are set on fire and turned to gold. The shadows grows into tall horizontal giants outstretched on the pavement. It all happens quickly after that.

For a while I stand by the open window and watch the people passing by the square. Buss drivers with their familiar caps and jackets and bags. Hands in their pockets, in no apparent rush to go home. People walking their variety of dogs. A small family of mother, father and a little girl, about 6-7 years old or so, with a cat in a leash. Getting too close to the fountain in the middle of the square, and the predictable result and unavoidable cat chase. On a bench with his back to the fountain, sits a man, a young father it seems. It looks like he is waiting for someone, but he is turning all his attention to the baby carriage in front of him. A woman in sweats sets her earphones in position, and starts jogging. Old women, young men, people on bikes, people putting up posters, people on their way from the gym. They all pass by. Then, the sun goes down. For a while the sky has a lovely light shade of ultramarine over the roof tops. Now all I can see are the neon lights of the store fronts and the illuminated face of the clock tower on the other side. From the open window I hear the sound of the fountain and some low men’s voices. Then they too quiet down. Another bus passes. It looks empty. I close the window.
