The Original

July 4th, 2014, 4pm

It was 26.7°C. The breeze was light.

I can attest to the realness of postprandial somnolence a.k.a. food coma. Post-recreational bike ride on a warm July 4th afternoon I craved a chili cheeseburger from the legendary Tommy’s. I hadn’t eaten here since my dad had an office across the street when I was a child two decades ago. I rarely indulge in chili-cheese-anything, but on this holiday I had to. After eating this delicious burger, the drowsiness hit me, and my nap turned into a four-hour slumber. This resulted in missing the festivities at the park where I had planned to set up a picnic blanket with a basket full of snacks. I watched the fireworks from my balcony instead, when I could have congregated with thousands of Angelenos on the green spaces of Grand Park at Downtown LA’s Civic Center. No regrets. Friends, this is why I flaked.
