Almost missed my flight. The man at Tegel airport security asked me to open my bag. "Rolle, rolle" he said.

September 12th, 2013, 8pm

It was 17°C with clouds and visibility OK. The breeze was light.

I thought he meant my deodorant. But he wanted to see my fishing reel. For what feels like 5 minutes he examines the reel, looking at it from all angles, turning the knobs. After a minute or so I understand that he’s not looking at it with suspicion, but with admiration. He continues to ask me about price, the golden color and starts complimenting its beautiful design. He’s a fishing enthusiast! All along I’m sweating and thinking about my flight that leaves in a few minutes. Finally he gives it back, saying: “Sie ist sehr schön. Sehr schön.” — It’s very beautiful. I sprint to my gate, getting in just before it closes.
