Some sunrises don't look like they'll be anything special, then they end up turning out alright.

March 2nd, 2014, 9am

Myself and Dave Morrow had been staying in Reine/Hamnøy on the Lofoten Islands and Dave was really keen on a dawn shoot, so we drove up to Ramberg beach at about 06:30 (I think).

Despite the atrocious weather, it was quite a fun shoot and at about 08:00 we finally got some decent light hitting the storm clouds over the mountains. I spend a bit of time going up and down this section of the beach, trying to keep the framing of the sunrise and the mountains, but also trying to locate some particularly interesting patterns in the sand. I think these did the job nicely.

Although it doesn’t look like it, this was actually a surprisingly stormy morning! The wind was properly howling and some gusts nearly took me off my feet and blew my hat and bag across the sand. Way across the sand. If you like warm, sunny beaches, perhaps the Arctic Circle in the winter isn’t the place for you.

This is two exposures blended together; one for the sand in the foreground and one for the mountains and sky.
