Myanmar is, by international standards a particularly superstitious culture with rituals and auspicious activities affecting everyday life in a myriad of ways. The researcher in us reserves judgement and keeps an open mind, but the explorer in us embraces it wholeheartedly. We’ve been cursed by some monks blessed by others, paid for the inside scoop for lottery numbers from deep-toking elders, and had team members used as lucky charms in underground gambling dens and otherwise thrown ourselves in at the deep end. This is the first project where we’ve had a ghost on staff, and it feels good. Not quite sure how the expense claim will pan out, but know that we’re going to file it.
