That brings back some memories!

May 15th, 2015, 10am

It was 11°C with broken clouds. The breeze was light.

One memory I have of my Granddad on my Dad’s side dates, I reckon, from the early 1970s, and it’s of standing in the driveway of his bungalow at 44 Downs Way, Great Bookham (in Surrey) and admiring his Wolseley. All have long since gone now: the car - scrapped; the bungalow - demolished and replaced by a large detached house; and the granddad - now in heaven!, but I can still picture myself standing there and being particularly impressed by the fact that the Wolseley badge on the radiator grille lit up!

Had this all happened just 5-10 years ago then I would have said something like “How cool is that?!” but of course that’s not how British 7 year-olds spoke in the early 1970s, so I probably just said something rather more understated like “That’s good!”

I have no idea what model of Wolseley my Granddad owned, and my Dad’s dementia means that he won’t have any memory of this at all, but I’m pretty sure it was smaller than the one in the photo above (and cream in colour). I spotted this Wolseley in Tolpuddle on my recent holiday. I think it’s a Wolseley 6/90, but I would be happy to be corrected on that. Unfortunately I didn’t think to check on the sides of the bonnet (hood) or on the back, where the model name would have been written. I suppose that gives me an excuse to return before too long to take another look!
