There are places in the world where men can still be found deep in conversation about the appropriate way to prepare beautiful fish.

May 10th, 2012, 4pm

At this particular fish stall, in the old Testaccio Market one metro stop south of the Colosseum, there was also a photograph of Marcello Mastroianni, looking over the fresh tuna and looking out at us, as we stare back at him, the tuna, his cousin the fishmonger, and his flirtatious grandnephew.

A week after this photo was taken, the old market was closed for good, and later demolished, after over 90 years in operation. The market relocated to a shiny new building a few blocks away, which has underground parking and no character.

I can only assume that Mastroianni’s progeny has settled in and is carrying on with the fish and conversations.
