The winter peace of Lake Superior

January 20th, 2015, 4pm

It was -3.3°C. The wind was calm.

I packed the car and drove 85 miles up the North shore of Lake Superior to a mid-winter haunt. I’ve visited this resort enough in the past few years to justify the characterization. The winter offers low rates plus one night free.

I expect cloudy days, mild temperatures, only slight breezes. Light of color gray, blue , dark green and a touch of dull burnished gold, last summers grasses, will paint my photographs.

Winter thins out both song birds and tourists: leaving a seasonal silence filled with the rhythmic sighing of the Lake made restless by distant winds. And time!

Time to contemplate a mid-winter peace
