A Ramadan Iftar on Mohammed Mahmoud st. in memory of Atef el Gawhary, killed in 2012 by the Egyptian Army.

July 24th, 2013, 7pm

Atef was someone I knew from Tahrir, with a comically raspy voice but always friendly and always looking out to make sure people had food, water, or whatever else they needed. He was killed May 2, 2012 by the Army during clashes at a sit-in. Tonight friends of his and others gathered on Mohammed Mahmoud street, next to Tahrir, to enjoy dinner together and commemorate him and others who are no longer with us. Far from somber, it was a beautiful and quiet evening. The street, scene of so many confrontations with police, now with all its amazing murals and graffiti, felt welcoming and homey. At the end of the evening, someone brought out a cake

Emmanuel, Craig, Amal, Mark and 3 others said thanks.
