Resting and stretching during The Great Saunter, a 32 mile walk around the island of Manhattan.

May 4th, 2014, 5pm

It was 17.2°C with scattered clouds. There was moderate breeze.

The Great Saunter is more of a celebration of urban adventuring than a race or a contest, and that’s what makes it fun. This 32 mile walk around the island of Manhattan, a long-standing under-the-radar event (not one friend of mine had ever heard of it), attracts an interesting collection of urban explorers every year.

We had planned on doing it for months, but I didn’t sign up online until the night before. And we went down there having no idea how many people would be there. I was surprised to see 1,187 people like me (well, like me in one regard) waiting outside the registration area in the tavern, getting ready to talk a long, slow walk for the day.

Here’s what I saw.

Shu, Robin and Christine said thanks.
