Flin Flon, Manitoba Canada, I day I will never forget

June 18th, 2013, 7am

I work in a classroom of about 15 students who are each very unique. Some having development issues, social issues among others but, all great kids. We decided one day in June to go to one of the closest underground mines in our area, that being Hudbay in Flin Flon Manitoba. We wanted our students to be reminded why we need an education and what the benefits of graduating are (and the money that could be made as a result.) We took them into the above ground areas of the mine and even took them to the Mining Academy. We had great fun. I feel that by doing a trip like this, I got to know my students a little better. I guess, what I mean by not being able to forget that day is that, it is the connection I made with my students that day that will forever change the way I will eventually teach.

While I was typing this up, one of my students said to me; “do you remember how we hit a bird on the way to Flin Flon?” (Yes, I hit a bird on the way to Flin Flon. The funny thing is, they where all sleeping when it happened and if I had not told them they would not have even known.) I guess it is the little things that stick in our minds and they will forever stick in mine.
