In Ghana, Bad Traffic means Good Business.

March 24th, 2014, 3pm

One thing you are bound to see in Ghana, especially Accra is traffic hawkers. And when the traffic is bad, the weather is hot and stress is high. That’s when these traffic hawkers make money the most.

I don’t know many places where this is done. You can get anything you want stuck in traffic, from some ice cold water or blue skies fresh juice to craig mod’s favourite plantain chips.

On this particular occasion I was hungry and thirsty. I didn’t know what to do, the traffic was bad, and the weather was hot, I was sweating like a pregnant fish in the taxi. I thought, if only I had something cool and refreshing…. And out of no where came this young man, waving this bottle filled with fresh pineapple-ginger juice. He made my day.

From my car, I could see sachet-water hawkers making sales, moving from one vehicle to the other. There were other people getting plantain chips, mothers getting football for their kids and some other people buying movie CDs.

Well there was no better way to put it. Bad traffic, hot weather makes for perfect business.

Craig and Christine said thanks.
