Middle of nowhere, some island off Southern California.

Growing up on this side of the Pacific Ocean, I learned geography by memorizing landscapes: The islands and sea to the west, mountains to the east. Downtown’s north, Long Beach and everything else’s south. That’s flipped around when you’re roaming around a deserted, quiet island and gazing back at the edge of Southern California.

Humans are second to nature here. There are more fox paw prints than footprints. More birds than people.
