Cairo. Mosque of Hassan.

December 13th, 2013, 4pm

Cairo. Mosque of Hassan. Round lobby - pendants in stalactites - long ropes hanging from above. We wear slippers of woven palm.

Mosque of Ibn Tulun, nearly destroyed, was chosen by Ibrahim Pasha to become a hospital. Abbas Pasha removed the workers for his country house on the road to Matarié. Huge courtyard; aisle with pointed arches, upheld by long, square pillars, flanked at the four corners by a column.

Roumelie square. On Roumelie square we find our friends the buffoons. The kid was playing dead (quite well), they collected money to resuscitate him; they put an iron hook in his mouth and he walked with it, naked. Not far from there, group of Arabs playing the Tarabouk [an earth drum] and singing; farther another one was telling a tale; incense was burning around him.

Turkish bath. - Small boy with a red tarboosh who was massaging my right thigh with a melancholy air.

Bride in the streets. I heard a wedding and hurried. The bride under a pink silk canopy, escorted by two women with beautiful eyes, especially the one to her left; the bride, as always, covered in a red veil which, with her conic hat, makes her look like a column - the bride is so entangled she can barely walk.

Holy men. A holy man from Rosetta falls on a woman and fucks her in public. The women who were there removed their veils and hide the coupling. Story of a French man lost in High Egypt and without any means; to live he thinks of pretending to be a Muslim holy man and pulls it off. Another Frenchman recognizes him… - The holy man ends up with an office of 12.000 francs in the military administration.
