It’s hard to describe the unique joy of skating between maple trees frozen in the ice, crossing one leg over the other and chasing embers through the dark. I’d never experienced anything like it. The ice glimmered around the Schwedenfeuer and moonlight shadows reached across the snow. We shouted to each other amidst the sounds of the crackling fire and the wind blowing through the bare trees.
I don’t know how much time passed. A moon dog glowed in the sky as the clouds thinned and Orion began to shine. I unzipped my coat and let the wind of winter rush against my chest.
Basking in apricity
Getting some fresh air among the pines
Sleeping under the Milky Way
Watching sparks drift into the summer night
Listening to coyotes calling in the western forest
Regrouping at the merging of Smudge Creek and Head River
Cross-country skiing in the wildlands
Pulling as close as we dared to the dancing flame
Circled around a fire underneath swaying cedars
