This worm-like looking food is called “chorogi”, or Chinese artichoke. These are pickled and have a salty sour taste with a hint of Japanese basil. They are sometimes eaten during New Years or as a snack to accompany alcholic drinks. I have lived in Japan for over 10 years but this was the first time I tried it. Surprising how even after 10 years there are some dishes that I’ve never tried or even seen. Always amazed of the depth of Japanese cuisine.
