Hot, my skin was moist. Then I felt it again, a prickle of cold across my bare chest. I didn’t know what to make of it. I don’t often wake in the middle of the night. Clumsily I hauled myself up and groped for my water bottle. My throat was dry. A few swigs of tepid water, a drop escaped and fell on my chest. I laid back down, and as I reentered the airstream of the fan, the water droplet on my skin cooled pleasantly. I was ready to drift back to sleep when I felt the icy tickle again. And again. I felt it just momentarily. It was a spray of water. I looked up to the window I was lying below and saw the sky was dark a glowing ember. Lightning flash. Rain.It hasn’t rained in months. The storm gathered, I closed my window to keep out the droplets but lay awake listening. Finally. Rain.
