Ahma

September 15th, 2007, 9pm

Normally I don’t talk about my grandma/Ahma as it was personal but Today I woke up and I thought “Why the F*ck Not.” (Normally at this age you learnt to curse..Am I right?). Well let’s began

My ahma (Ahma is a Hokkien dialect for Grandma) is probably what I consider a Badass. Here are my reasons. She was born in China on the first of January in 1919 but for some reasons we celebrate on the 15th of September. I know I know, You must be like “What, that doesn’t make any sense because her birthday is on the first of January but you celebrate it on the 15th of September?” Don’t worry, I also don’t know why. She migrated to Singapore at the age of 8 and she was sold to her adopted father who is a crab seller.(Mmm….I love crabs..) She never saw her mom, dad and her younger brother again. She didn’t received any education when young. She helped her adopted father with work for example, help out with farming or collecting pails of water for cooking or washing. She got married at the age of 18 years old. (Yeah I know but hey that’s life in the past). She had a total of 9 children (My dad was the youngest )….Now I’m not gonna write anymore of her past as I will get emotional.

It’s really sad because she passed away when I was at the first day in my new school. I was 13 at the time.

My dad’s sister wrote this down in “The loving memory of My Ahma (Not gonna reveal her real name)

“For youngest grand daughter Elizabeth - Thank you for letting Ah Ma hold and stroke your skinny hand as you sit by her side. This always bring a concerned bright smile to her face as she said ‘Must eat more’. Remember those times when Ah Ma will jokingly ask you to let her have your toys? This is the teasing and childlike side of Ah Ma. You have a soft and tender heart and felt sad to see Ah Ma in her condition and cried your heart out at her funeral. Be comforted that Ah Ma is no longer in pain. She has a new body in Heaven now.”

Every time I read this I swear I cry a bit…I guess I gotta go and give her my toys…

…I miss her
