Brief Reviews: Inside Llewyn Davis

January 25th, 2014, 8pm

It was 5.6°C. The wind was calm.

If you’ve considered seeing Inside Llewyn Davis, be prepared for total sensory enjoyment.

You’ve got the Coen Brothers bringing their best to the screen since True Grit in 2010, which was one of my personal favorites in that year. The screenplay is enchanting and confusing, with the exception of Carey Mulligan’s totally flat and boring ‘Jean.’ The directing is beautiful, with some shots that are simple yet flawless. It’s the first movie in my Oscar quest that I feel is undoubtedly qualified to be considered for Best Directing, and it’s not even on the list.

Speaking of Oscars, Oscar Isaac plays the role of Llewyn Davis, and I can only imagine that audition tape: can you play guitar? can you sing? can you grow a righteous beard? do you like cats? can you harmonize with Justin Timberlake?

Really, this was a joy to watch. I’m still not sure how it ended, but I’m okay with that. I’d be willing to sit down and watch it again, but for now I’m content to have started seeing the Oscar quality (all of the Oscars involved, actually) I’ve been waiting for.
