Reflect on a recent time when you went outside into the sunshine and noticed the light on your skin. It didn’t take a lot of effort for you to notice the warmth right?
Practicing mindfulness is familiarising ourselves with the present moment.
Many of us don’t know what the present moment is. We are too busy thinking about something that happened or will happen. Mindfulness teaches you to notice when your mind has wandered down one path or another and be able to bring it back to the here and now. The more you practice noticing your wandering mind, the easier it will be to bring your mind back to the present.
Cultivating mindfulness takes practice.
It doesn’t have to take a lot of time. You simply have to start noticing. Let’s take a pause right now.
Inhale. Exhale.
How is your breathing? Is it short or deep long breaths?
Take a look around you.
Where are you? What do you see?
Listen.
Do you hear anything? Music? The sound of your breath?
Feel.
How does your body feel? Is it cold? warm?
Inhale. Exhale.
How is your breath now?
