“The pulsing drum, often considered to represent the heartbeat of the world, accompanied prayers for the sick to be made well, the recitation of a warrior’s coups, and (of course) the dancing and songs that enriched the spiritual life of the community. ” (Prairie edge: trading co. & galleries)
My father is Metis, he grew up with the fiddle, but not so much the drum. This was a tradition that was lost to him. Recently, at the age of 76 years old, he had the opportunity to learn how to make a hand drum. He was thrilled with his result and learning this valued tradition, so he promptly made one for each of his children. I would like to paint something on this drum that encompasses my feelings for my father. Strength, courage, wisdom and tender at heart. My father is my rock, and when I find the perfect symbol I will paint it on my drum.
