Jumping Into The Virtual World

March 22nd, 2016, 7pm

Millions of people everyday jump onto social media instead of reading books, going outside or hanging out with friends. Each year, more and more people become antisocial and start using virtual communications. They miss out on nature and what’s typically real. Has social media become a problem? Social media has been growing. In 2014, social media has become not only a key part of the modern lifestyle but a useful marketing channel for businesses of all sizes. But, there are kids who can’t even conceive of a world without smartphones and social networking. This can lead to many problems to anyone. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. Anyone could do it, especially on social media. People get bullied at school and that’s bad enough. Any kid, teen, could just go home and notice threatful messages on their online pass time. Social media gives people a way to anonymously threaten someone and get away with it because they will be anonymous. Also, kids usually don’t tell their parents about the hurtful problems they face in life. In conclusion, a child could be the next cyberbullied victim because of social media. What do people with social media do mostly on any given day? They’re probably on social media. Children and sometimes adults don’t get the physical activities they need because of this occupation. Sometimes, they neglect other things like studies and homework. They get carried away. There are also effects on mental health. Social media is addicting. Social media makes people compare their lives with others. Social media glamorizes drugs and alcohol. A study from the University of Michigan shows that avid visitors on social media are usually more unhappy than sometime visitors. Social media makes people unhappy. Then again, there are arguments against these cons. Social networking doesn’t have cyberbullying problems anymore. “Cyberbullying is easily stopped with the ‘Ignore’ and “Block” function in social media sites. Also, you could just put your account on private,” stated Ayan Zaman. Another considerable argument from the pros side is communication. People could reach each other through virtual communications. Distance doesn’t matter, that makes our lives way easier. Also, news could be reached to anyone within seconds. This is a lifesaver for anyone about to face a disaster. Social media does more good than bad. You should just know how to utilize it and for how long. Social networking sites help in connecting friends who live far apart. They also give us news, which is helpful and gets us a lot of information. Yes, they could be a starter for cyberbullying and also a place to be carried away. But, that’s not much of a problem. Cyberbullying could be dealt in a lot of ways and time could just be used wisely. Kids should have time set to play outdoors and read. That should make them loosen up and feel good. In interesting and concluding words, social media is just fine if used correctly with time for disconnection. Otherwise, not really.
