If you’ve considered seeing Dallas Buyers Club, be prepared to let it challenge a lot of your assumptions.
Like the assumptions you make about healthcare, and the way our country approaches homosexuality and cross-dressing, and how your cellphone is just not efficient enough. Because Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are fearless in this move, you’ll be a little afraid as you sit there warm and healthy on your comfortable couch.
Unlike many Academy Award nominees, Dallas Buyers Club has a real level of depressing content: good and bad, inspiring and heart-breaking. It’s hard to walk that line in a movie and not become contrite, but instead of blazing with reactions, Dallas Buyers Club leaves you reeling with the impact of its story.
The humanity of these characters shouldn’t be as surprising as it is, given that it’s based on real life (Best Original Screenplay, at least, please). Be prepared to think, feel, and enjoy.
