Usually you can see Haleakala Volcano in the distance. Not today, yet again...

November 19th, 2013, 10am

It was 27.2°C. The wind was light.

On days like this when the trade winds aren’t blowing, they’re replaced instead by Kona breezes, which blows in the opposite direction, generally.

Thus, they bring volcanic fog (or vog) over from the Big Island, blanketing the area in a light haze. What is typically a clear view of the summit of Haleakala Volcano from anywhere on Maui’s central plain becomes a misty obscuration. Is that even a word? Maybe obscurement; yes, I like that better. :-)

The fog also makes my allergies act up a bit; people suffering from bronchial ailments or asthma, also have a hard time of it (I imagine the folks who live on the Kona side of the Big Island, especially).

I lived in a village and homestead set aside for people of Hawaiian ancestry. I am not Hawaiian but had been adopted into the culture—to my profound gratitude.
