In 1993, an Alaskan man set the record for heaviest broccoli: a whopping 35 lbs.

When you hear Alaska, chances are the first things you think of include snow, snow dogs, and more snow. Now, add ginormous, monster vegetables to that list.

The Alaskan State Fair is a regular showcase for John Evans. Irish-born, South-Wales raised, and now, an Alaskan. He’s crossed 6 countries, 4 states, and experiments regularly with up to 70 vegetable seed varieties. It’s resulted in 18 state and 7 world records, including the world’s heaviest broccoli crown.

The secret to his success? Compost tea.

Maybe nature’s best fertilizer can save my wilting fern. It’s on its way to setting a record, too: world’s saddest plant.
