Today I had my first Mokuhanga lesson. It’s Mokuhanga that produced the Ukiyo-e masterpieces of Hiroshige. It’s made of wood, ink and hands: my hands drawing and cutting. It wasn’t easy, and I made many mistakes in mixing ink and rice glue. And this is the result. Not so perfect. “It’s not perfect but yet it’s still beautiful”, Sensei told me. “It has expression”. So today I learned two things rather than just one.
The blue hour.
Walking and drawing.
Green on blue.
Whitman & sweets.
