How to cause a traffic jam!

April 16th, 2014, 11am

On our way to a museum near St Omer today we came to halt at a roundabout, initially with no obvious reason for the delay. After a few minutes though we understood, as a truck carrying a giant wind turbine blade came slowly into view, edging round the roundabout. Due to the length of the blade, the only way that the truck could make a left turn was by coming part way round the roundabout, then reversing round past its original entry point before being able to continue forward down the desired exit road. Once one truck had completed this manoeuvre a second appeared and did exactly the same!

I take my hat off to these drivers (metaphorically-speaking, as I don’t generally wear a hat!) for their skill and their apparent unflappability in the face of mounting queues of impatient Frenchmen!

Here’s the other end of the second blade:

Paul and Lia said thanks.
