This photo was taken in Stewart Island, New Zealand – not, as the location tag suggests, in Washington DC.

Stewart Island sits at the bottom of New Zealand like a footnote. Its people – fishermen, mainly – are salty and rugged, just like the landscape, which veers between dense rainforest and wind-bitten beaches. This wood-slatted boat is a perfect fit with the island: abused by the elements, blessed by the journey, and all the more photogenic for it.
