Occupy Rizal Park

August 26th, 2013, 5pm

It was 27°C with scattered clouds. The breeze was gentle.

An estimated 600,000 people flocked to Rizal Park, locally known as ‘Luneta’, at the nation’s capital today to protest against the pork barrel system. The protest rally dubbed as #MillionPeopleMarch started on a Facebook post and event by an artist and a regular employee, respectively. It asked for the abolition of the PDAF (Priority Development Assistance Fund) that the legislators misused and to prosecute them for stealing money from the taxpayers.

This is a protest rally powered by social media, the youth and the middle class. It wasn’t a call against an individual, but against a system that is corrupt and only favors those who are in power.

This is a protest rally where every walks of life is affected. This is a protest rally that shows our government that WE are their boss.

It was attended by students and the working class, Catholics and moslems, the poor and the rich, activists and first-timers. We may have different backgrounds, but each and every one of us wants accountability and transparency in the government. We want to know where our and our parents’ and our kids’ taxes go… and it shouldn’t be on their pockets.

It was a very loud sentiment that this is enough, we are pushed too much. It doesn’t end here at Luneta. The revolution only started.
