Snowdonia, from Tryfan's North Ridge

April 25th, 2014, 11am

It was 13°C with clouds and visibility OK. The breeze was light.

Looking down over the Ogwen valley, taken here in late-Autumn.

Tryfan is absolutely beautiful and offers probably the most authentic big mountain experience south of the Scottish border. The fantastic scramble up the ridge is always different, never hard and fun in any weather. Caked in snow & ice, it’s probably at its best, although the Autumn colour of the Welsh countryside as a backdrop is particularly pleasant rather than the damp mist that usually envelops the area throughout much of the Winter!

The approach along the valley never fails to excite as Tryfan rises up majestically in the middle of the valley, with a sharp ridge of rock puncturing the sky and connecting the mountain to the nearby Glyders. Having parked at the base, within minutes the gradient ramps up and you start to pick your line through the rocks, the slopes to the side falling away increasingly steeply.
