Vrana: vantage point of Croatia's largest lake

August 30th, 2014, 7pm

For years, a guru of mine had been telling me to find a big rock to sit on. I finally found it. It had been hovering above the place my grandfathers and grandmothers had grown up…

Overlooking my ancestral village is this serene view. Before me, the islands of the Kornati Archipelago (google the George Bernard Shaw quote about it #overquoted!). Behind me, a chapel erected over the men from the second world war, marched up here and thrown into a well after execution. Also, placards describing the canal system which ran to Zadar in Roman times and what happened during the Ottoman Empire.

Yep, as the Croatian foundational myth goes (of 5 brothers and 2 sisters arriving on the shoreline) “this place looks good to camp; no one will bother us here”.
