As wearable technology interest reaches fever pitch, I ask myself two questions (1) What kind of person wears what kind of watch? (2) What kind of person do I want to be?
First of all, what do we know about these new wearable devices? They will solve the screen addiction problem currently sweeping the globe! No more couples going to dinner starring at their screens rather than each other. They will motivate us to move more, sit less and reach our fitness goals. They will help us view time itself in whole new ways! These are the key promises relayed to us by trusty marketeers.
But what does this suggest? That the kind of person who would be interested in such a device will be aware of their struggling to use technology in appropriate ways. They will be lazy and unmotivated. They will be trying to “be more productive” with the time they have (read - stressed).
Do I want to be this kind of person?
Whats the difference with a classic wristwatch? They won’t help you solve self-inflicted problems. They won’t get you up and about more and they won’t make you any more productive!
A classic wristwatch doesn’t have to cost thousands of pounds. There are many nice models for a few hundred.
What kind of person buys a classic wristwatch? The kind of person who seeks less screen time not more. The kind of person who understands the way to solve their technology addiction problem, is not with more technology but less. The kind of person who takes a good honest look in the mirror and motivates himself to get out more and move because of a deep sense of self-worth.
The kind of person who values his time and understands it’s true worth, and with that understanding hits those life goals with everything he’s got.
So what kind of person are you?
