Capture a river's energy in 50 feet of painted steel.

July 22nd, 2014, 2pm

Cascading from its concrete plaza, La Grande Vitesse is a bright red tumble. It eludes the mind’s grasp. Hulking and slippery, there’s no angle from which it feels like it’s contained. The Grand River is somewhere nearby.

The sculpture is from 1969 by Alexander Calder. The building is from 1968, City Hall, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.
