My lunchtime stroll today took me back to Kings Cross Central, which is a hive of activity in several respects, including the construction of the many buildings that are destined to form part of this ambitious new development.

This building is known as Gridiron, due to the use of 396 cast iron columns - actually, sheaths around square concrete pillars - to form a colonnade around the building. The columns weigh in at a hefty 2.2 tonnes each and were made from recycled cast iron at the Hargreaves Foundry in Halifax.

Like many of the buildings being erected here, the ground floor is due to house restaurants and shops, with the rest of the building being office space. It is certainly shaping up nicely.

Valerie and Chloe said thanks.
