Day 35 #100HappyDays: Connections

April 15th, 2014, 4pm

It was 14°C with clouds and visibility OK. The breeze was gentle.

I’m a little distracted today and feel slightly helpless and out of control. But that is probably because I am. I hate it when a family member is in hospital and all you can do is wait. No matter how often doctors tell you that it’s routine and they’ve done it a hundred times, you can’t relax until you have them home safely.

I’m working at home today and trying to keep myself busy with my presentation prep work but my mind keeps wandering. So, I’m taking a break on my balcony and enjoying the sun. And cleaning and polishing my new purchase - my typewriter.

I spotted this label on the typewriter in the antique shop yesterday and it kind of swung it for me to purchase it as it is from the nearest big town I grew up from. The magic of the internet tells me this shop was the type of shop I would have loved to go into. I love stationery and the thought of shop assistants on ladders to get to supplies makes me think of an old musical number, with Fred Astaire dancing among the typewriters and pens.

Here’s a photo of the shop in the 1950s: http://www.francisfrith.com/harrow/photos/station-road-c1960_h429035/#utmcsr=google.co.uk&utmcmd=referral&utmccn=google.co.uk

I like the connection I have with history with my purchase. I wonder what stories have been told on the machine, and what stories it will tell in the future …
