The case of the missing train... and a cup of coffee

March 14th, 2014, 6am

It was one of those frustrating mornings today when heading for Herne Hill, the station where I change trains so that I can come into St Pancras station rather than Victoria. It is my habit, as soon as my first train goes through Bromley South, to get my phone out and check the live departure boards for Herne Hill, although never actually expecting there to be a problem (which is kind of contradictory really, but there you go!).

Well this morning I was greeted with the dreaded word ‘CANCELLED’. My initial reaction was to groan a groan of disappointment (in my head obviously, not out loud, that would never do!). But immediately after that initial sense of frustration my very next thought was an incredibly positive one - that means I’ve got time to get a coffee from the little snack bar on the platform. Hurray! Result!

Except that I then had a brief battle in my mind.

“But that’s £1.99 you’re going to spend, and you’re trying to save money. You can make yourself a cup of coffee when you get to work!”

“Yes, but if I stay on this train to Victoria and then get the Tube up to St Pancras I’ll be spending more than that on the tube fare.”

“Why can’t you just change at Herne Hill and wait 10 minutes for the next connection and not buy the coffee?”

“Oh shut up!

So, I got off at Herne Hill, bought the coffee, took this photo and waited 10 minutes.

I’m £1.99 poorer, but I think I can live with that!

David Wade, Christine and mi said thanks.
