This half loop in Russell Square is all that remains of Britain’s first experiment with Big Bang creation - the Little Hadron Collider run by UCL and RADA. This earliest of particle accelerators was intended to use the particular confluences of air currents in this area to get close to the conditions present at the Big Bang, but at a scale that could be run by students on bicycles and could be observed from the nearby cafe. (RADA’s involvement was extremely prescient - they used the LHC experiment as part of a module called ‘Science Presenting - Conveying Wonder Outdoors’, Michael Burke and Raymond Baxter were tutors, Brian Cox an early graduate.)
