I’ve always been a bit of an outsider in the theatre scene here. I have degrees in music and devised theatre but my aesthetic is based on a type of integrative performance that is more familiar to European and NYC-based audiences.
Even though I’ve been back here for seven years, most of my group work and teaching has sat outside the main theatre scene. So when I was asked to substitute teach for the 4th year voice & speech class at the UofS Drama Department I was honored and excited to do so.
Today I taught my third of seven classes. The students are excited about the body-based vocal work I’m teaching them and I love how willing they are to try everything I’ve thrown at them so far.
Later this afternoon I’m having tea with one of the other drama professors to talk shop and get to know each other better.
Part of performative work is working in community. What might happen through these small meetings these two weeks? What new moments might ensue?
