20 degrees below

October 8th, 2013, 9am

I will admit that ‘20 degrees below’ is an exaggeration, but this is a cry of frustration!

The open plan office where I work has too many air/con units in it, so almost as soon as we moved in, we managed to get one of the units disabled. And that was great. Sufficient heat in winter, and if the English summer got warm enough, sufficient cooling on a hot day.

But then engineers started fiddling. You know, the kind of fiddling that breaks more than it fixes. And, lo and behold, this unit springs back into life, but totally outside our control, and only blowing out really cold air. That’s right - we can’t turn it off or change the temperature. So we complain to the maintenance people and they scratch their heads for a while until eventually someone works out how to turn it off. Great.

But then the next time the engineer comes and fiddles, we witness another resurrection and we’re plunged back into the freezer again. And that’s what happened yesterday. This morning the unit is still happily blasting away like Mr Freeze.

Where’s Batman when you need him?!
