An afternoon of art - part 2

May 21st, 2014, 6pm

As mentioned in part 1, I was able to get quite a dose of art on Wednesday after leaving work. My second port of call was out in Stratford, in the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre of all places (the largest such centre in Europe apparently)!

The charity Shape - “a disability-led arts organisation…. [that] develops opportunities for disabled people to participate fully in the arts and cultural sector” - have opened a ‘pop-up gallery’ in one of the shop units, and as a friend of mine has several paintings on show there I was invited to an event celebrating the opening. The gallery is designed to bring “the work of the UK’s most exciting and eclectic disabled artists to a new audience”, and is definitely worth a visit if you’re ever in that neck of the woods.

The main photo above is of a piece called ‘Sitting Without Purpose’ by James Lake, which is made entirely of cardboard. Very impressive, I think you’ll agree.

My friend - Mike Fryer - has a total of 10 works at the gallery, although only 4 were on show last night. Here’s one of my favourites - a night view from the London Eye.
