What color is the sea? 11

January 2nd, 2014, 5am

When I saw the colour of the sea this morning (nothing if not burnt umber), I knew I had to add to the series of sketches that I undertook last year.

I confess that I almost entitled this sketch The Sea is Dying, but my partner convinced me that, however true that may be, it is too early in the morning to evoke such despair. If you do wish to follow that line of thought, I suggest googling our dying seas, or just ask your local marine biologist. 1

Finally, if you want a more hopeful image, then I refer you to yesterday’s sunrise, which left me crying with joy instead of sorrow: Sun Rising on New Year.

  1. BTW I didn’t mean to suggest that the colours in this image were produced by pollution or global warming. They were not. The restricted palette of this sunrise moment seems to me quite awe-inspiring, even beautiful. Other Hi members felt this way as well, including one who cited Psalms 19:1. So, why did I raise the issue of the dying sea? Because my first emotional response to this particular conjunction of colors produced an almost post-apocalyptic vision of the world, a perfect backdrop for a sci-fi or horror flick. I’m glad that several commentators brought me back to the pure glory of the heavens.
