The Breitling wing walkers were displaying at the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight on Saturday - a great day out that my son and I thoroughly enjoyed.

This morning, having received some very shocking news about the sudden death of a close colleague’s husband over the weekend, this particular picture made me realise that life is sometimes like this for us all. Something comes along and turns everything upside down. Some kind of stability will undoubtedly return, but while upside down we must hang on as we’re thrown around.

For me the safety harness, the anchor during such times, is my faith in God’s keeping and sustaining power and in His ultimate goodness. If I only had myself to look to at such times I would be tumbling down to ruin in no time at all.

God shall alone the refuge be,
and comfort of my mind;
too wise to be mistaken, he,
too good to be unkind.

In all his holy, sovereign will,
he is, I daily find,
too wise to be mistaken, still
too good to be unkind.

What though I can’t his purpose see,
nor all his footsteps find?
Too wise to be mistaken, he,
too good to be unkind.

Hereafter he will make me know,
and I shall surely find,
he was too wise to err, and O,
too good to be unkind!
