Built in 1929 and extended just 3 years later, the Burgh Island Hotel is situated (rather obviously) on Burgh Island, about 300 yards from the mainland across from Bigbury-on-Sea. It is accessible on foot at low tide, so we decided to pay a visit to the island and have a look round.

Noël Coward the playwright, the pioneer woman aviator (aviatrix) Amy Johnson, and R.J. Mitchell, the designer of the iconic Supermarine Spitfire all stayed at Burgh Island Hotel, and so have rooms named after them.

Not being paying guests at the hotel (very much out of our price range anyway, at £665 per night for the high-end rooms), we could only get as far as the gate of the hotel, hence the photo at the very top of this page. But we were free to walk around the rest of this small island, which is well worth it for the great views you get back across to the mainland as well as out to sea, which looked so clear and inviting!
