"Please drive slowly through the pub"

June 27th, 2016, 3pm

As you might imagine, seeing a sign saying “Please drive slowly through the pub” as we drove slowly through winding country lanes while exploring the small villages dotted around south Devon certainly made us look twice, and then stop to turn up that lane to see what it meant! After all, how can you drive through a pub??

Very easily, as we found out! The pub, dating from the 16th Century, is mostly located on one side of the narrow lane, but with some tables and chairs, and some of the toilets, on the other side. So we did what the sign said, and drove slowly through, which didn’t phase the people sitting there enjoying their beer, parking just along the road so that we could get out and have a closer look. It was a very quaint village, with several thatched houses and other interesting historical buildings, including a church (St James the Less), parts of which date back to the late 13th Century.

Well worth a visit, if you’re ever in that neck of the woods.
