‘Come, you’ll have fun! You’re not going to meet anyone staying in …’
I had been invited to join a friend and her friend (the ‘date’) on a night out to grab a bite to eat and listen to some jazz. I really wasn’t in the mood and she really wasn’t selling the date to me. The ‘date’ was interested in her but she wasn’t keen so wanted to introduce him to more girls, and I drew the short straw. Hence, date in inverted commas, as strictly speaking, I was gate-crashing a romantic evening the ‘date’ had planned for my friend.
A blind date at university turned out successfully and we dated for a year and a half, but other than that, I’m pretty sceptical of fix-ups from friends. I think love is a complicated thing and who you’re attracted to can’t be pin-pointed as a set of rules or a type.
I had a fun evening and made the most of the situation. I treated it like a rehearsal; I was witty and charismatic, with sparkling conversation, easy to do when you don’t fancy the guy. It was an interesting evening in observing human nature and behaviour. I felt sorry for the ‘date’ though. He’s obviously keen on my friend and was on a date with a gatecrasher/gooseberry. I enjoyed the jazz, especially jazz versions of Forget you, Crazy and Blurred Lines.
And my happy moment: walking over the Golden Jubilee Bridge to catch my train and seeing one of my most favourite views of London looking most spectacular and beautiful.
